Catalina Vásquez Salazar, also known as Kathiuska.

I grew up in Colombia between scripts and drawings, and I still work between the two: images that tell a story, and stories that need an image to be understood.

For more than ten years that has meant art direction, illustration and animation for brands such as Snapchat, Canva, Airbnb, Reserve and Confusion Capital. Lately it has meant fintech: taking products that are hard to explain and finding the everyday scene that makes them clear.

The other half of my work is my own. As Kathiuska I make films, comics and objects about family, memory and the places I come from. My first documentary, Reciclando recuerdos, was about my father; Cárcel, an animated short, premiered in competition at DOK Leipzig; and a residency at the Maison des Auteurs in Angoulême started my first graphic novel.

My master’s research in Latin American Cultural Studies at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana explores family memory and how the disposition to serve is passed down through generations.
